Medical Marijuana Approved by D.C. City Council

The district of Columbia just got potentially a lot greener.  The city council has just approved a measure allowing for the sale and distribution of medical marijuana.

The original legislation only allowed for patients to possess no more than two ounces of the drug for a 30 day period. An approved amendment will increase the possession limit to four ounces a month if there’s a medical need, according to the paper.

The bill will provide for between five and eight marijuana dispensaries throughout the city where the drug can be purchased. The cost will be subsidized for patients that cannot afford to pay, the Post reported.

DC Mayor Adrian Fenty is expected to sign the bill. Congress will then have 30 days to review the legislation before it becomes law.

No word on whether marijuana-loving congressmen and women will be venturing into any of the new pot dispensares sure to be spawned by the approval of this mediacal marijuana bill.  Also no word on whether crack-loving city councilman Marion Barry will be setting up his own medical marijuana dispensary for recovering crack-heads.

What's the latest from the world of legalized weed?  Well, the state of California may have a ballot initiative soon debating whether to legalize recreational -- not just medical -- marijuana across the state.  That's exciting stuff, but we won't know whether the measure qualifies for the election for another month or so. 

In other news, both Los Angeles and San Jose city councils have voted to crack down on marijuana dispensary businesses, making serious moves to regulate the number of these legal weed spots that can operate within city limits. 

Many see the rise of medical pot dispensaries as a precursor to full legalization of everyone's favorite green pain reliever and appetite stimulant.  Only time will tell.  Stay tuned to this site for updates.

Lately, the New York Times has been covering medical marijuana news and debate with an increasingly thorough eye.  We check the NYT often for news about medical marijuana in California and elsewhere.  It seems as if a marijuana story or headline crops up at least three times per week in America's paper of record.  As such, we think you'd be well served to grab the RSS feed of the New York Times' medical marijuana category page.

• Truth Dig reprints Alternet's recent expose on New York City's alarmingly high marijuana arrest rate and the social and legal implications thereof.  Incidentally, the Village Voice calls NYC the "marijuana arrest capital of the World," with 43,000 weed arrests since 1997. Westchester Collective Up in Smoke

LAist reports that the Westchester Collective dispensary, which was located "on the second floor of a two-story commercial building," at 8936 Sepulveda Blvd. was severely damaged in a major fire last week. No injuries were reported, but it took nearly 70 firefighters to quell the raging inferno. 

No word on if/when the dispensary will reopen, or, for that matter, the cause of the blaze.
