Marijuana Shops in Los Angeles and L.A. County - Cannabis Dispensaries & Collectives

Everyone wants to know what's happening with the opening or closing of medical marijuana shops and dispensaries in the Los Angeles city and L.A. county areas.  Though the council has mandated the closing of the vast majority of the L.A. city and county's 750 plus dispensaries and cannabis collectives, the fact is that many are resisting the order and clinging to hopes that they will remain in business. 

An astounding fact: Medical marijuana dispensaries outnumber Starbucks in L.A. county by 4-1. Unbelievable!

Los Angeles Marijuana Dispensary Closings

Could a judge halt the closing of nearly 500 legal medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles?  It's possible.  The marijuana dispensaries cum pot clinics in L.A. have grown up around town in the last two years like, well, weeds. 

The Los Angeles Times has the latest on los angeles dispensary closings here.

In a little-known but shocking statistical development, pot dispensaries now dwarf the number of starbucks in L.A. and L.A. county.  Is that not mind boggling?  It seems around every corner there's a doctor offering medicinal pot complete with a neon sign, sketchy exterior and wonderful smelling interior.

Los Angeles Marijuana Dispensaries Raided by Federal Authorities

Earlier this month (August 2009) a handful of medical marijuana dispensaries were raided in Los Angeles in dramatic fashion despite earlier assurances from the U.S. Attorney General that such raids would no longer take place in the Obama administration. 

The Huffington Post's Anthony Citrano lays out the facts of the raids succinctly in a recent blog post.  Says Citrano: "

In February, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said that the DEA would no longer raid dispensaries that are operating in accordance with state law. Holder later said "our focus will be on people, organizations, that are growing, cultivating substantial amounts of marijuana and doing so in a way that's inconsistent with Federal law and State law."

On August 12, a task force that included the FBI, LAPD, LASD, and DEA raided the Organica and Overland Gardens Collectives at gunpoint, in riot gear, and with air support."

In riot gear ... with air support?  This is a scary development indeed for the L.A. pot dispensary community.  First Organica and Overland ... who's next?  Will dispensaries in and around the city of Los Angeles -- operating legally -- continue to be targeted?  The next several months should no doubt tell the tale.
